I once received a performance evaluation stating I was very detail-oriented, easy to get along with, and an effective communicator. However, the negative feedback that I received was that I am not stern enough, and allow staff too much autonomy. While I appreciated the positive feedback, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the negative feedback. I did not know how to change my approach to staff without also affecting the very same positive feedback I received. It seemed to be conflicting. If I was the evaluator I wouldn’t have just written the feedback on a paper and asked someone to sign it. Instead, I would have pulled them to the side throughout the course of the performance review, and explained why a specific action can be interpreted as “not stern enough.” Additionally, if there were any follow-up questions in regards to the feedback, I’d be available for the discussion to occur, and I’d be prepared with suggestions, and or/ examples as to when the specific action occurred and how it could have been handled.
