Discussion #2
This week’s topic is Perpetrators of Domestic Violence.
Required Reading: Chapter 9 (You may also wish to browse Chapter 11)
**As you read, please be mindful that while DV statistics tend to show females as victims and males as perpetrators, this is not ALWAYS the case. There are many factors that influence these statistics such as culture, societal pressures, and family dynamics to name a few.**
Prompt: Domestic violence calls are statistically the most dangerous calls for law enforcement to respond to. Earlier in the semester, students read the FCADV fatality reports that indicated that despite civil and/or criminal domestic violence injunctions (e.g., no contact orders, restraining orders, etc.), roughly 1/3 of domestic violence homicides persist. When victims attempt to leave the DV relationship, they are at greater than a 70% risk for DV homicide.
Directions: Using your textbook and a minimum of one (1) additional peer-reviewed, scholarly source, answer the following question. Don’t forget to respond to two peers and cite in APA format to earn full credit!! 200 words Question: Briefly discuss the criminal justice system’s response to domestic violence perpetrators. You can discuss a recent case, Florida State Statutes, or a current event (or all 3 to strengthen your discussion). Then, identify at least one action that can/should be taken (by the criminal justice system as a whole or one entity (i.e., law enforcement, corrections, courts, etc.) to reduce recidivism rates among domestic violence perpetrators.
