CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
WHAT IS IT?
“Presents an account of what happened to a business or industry over a number of years. It documents the events that senior managers have to deal with, such as changes in the competitive environment, and it shows the managers’ response, which usually involved changing the business- or corporate-level STRATEGY.”
WHY CASE STUDIES?
They provide you with experience of organizational problems.
You will learn to wear a management hat.
They illustrate what you have learned in different courses (management, marketing, administration, economics, etc.)
They allow you to evaluate the solutions that specific companies adopted with their problems.
You will be like a detective looking-in on a real company and analyze their decisions.
You will be able to play management’s uncertain game.
You will be able to make high-level decisions
They lead to class-room discussions on how to best tackle the uncertain world of business.

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT & CASE STUDIES
The current situation in the airline industry and the rise and demise of both Eastern and Pan Am suggest that managers of today’s airline corporations must manage their firms strategically. They cannot make decisions based on long-standing rules, historical policies, or simple extrapolations of current trends. The industry is simply too volatile for that!!
Airline CEOs must ask three key strategic questions:
Where is the organization now? (Not where management hopes it is)
If no changes are made, where will the organization be in one year? Two years? Five years? Are the answers acceptable?
If the answers are not acceptable, what specific actions should management undertake? What risks and payoffs are involved?
What is STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT? It is that set of managerial decisions and actions that determines the long-run performance of a corporation. It includes environmental scanning (both internal and external), strategy formulation (strategic planning), strategy implementation, and evaluation and control. The study of STRATEGIC MANAGEMENTtherefore emphasizes the monitoring and evaluating of external opportunities and threats in light of a corporation’s strengths and weaknesses in order to generate and implement a new strategic direction for that corporation.
1- READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS FIRST
There are case study SWOT instructions in this section. They are very detailed, so be sure to read them thoroughly before you begin. There is a document on Aviation Writing Tips and Guidelines. Follow those for writing format (headings, subheadings, topic sentences and paragraphs, APA format for citations and references). There are also a PowerPoint (on another airline) that points out tips for writing the SWOT analysis and a template for the SWOT. There is also a template document attached to the Dropbox.
2- CREATE AN OUTLINE
Develop an outline using the structure identified within the instructions. Fill in the sections with factual material. Write articulately so that the information within paragraphs is fluid. That means using connecting sentences / phrases, not just facts. Cite all factual material using in-text citations and references. Use a separate page at the end for the references.
3- REVIEW THE RUBRIC and YOUR WORK – COMPARE
The rubric that is posted in the drop box. Review the rubric before you begin the assignment and keep it near you as you work. Grade the rubric yourself (self assessment) before you turn it your paper; It includes content, structure, and writing quality (spelling, grammar, punctuation). Check each criterion for the level you have met. If you have not met the highest criteria that you want, then fix it before you submit your paper.
