Embedded Autonomy and Economic Missions Comparative Paper: This paper is based on an analysis of the following two books, excerpts of which will also be read as part of weekly assigned readings:
Evans, P. B. (1995). Embedded Autonomy: States and Industrial Transformation. Princeton University Press.
Mazzucato, M. (2021). Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism. Harper Collins Publishers.
In this essay, you will consider the similarities and differences between the developmental state concept as characterized by “embedded autonomy” in Peter Evans work and the concept of an “economic mission” as conceptualized by Mariana Mazzucato. These papers should focus on comparing these books and can use case studies from other weeks in the course or examples from beyond the course to build an argument. These papers should be between 2000 and 2500 words long, not including the bibliography.
