Me and my girlfriend, Caitlyn are conflicting over getting a dog. She wants a dog, but I think we should wait a year because we are doing long distance. We both only have two more semesters left of college, so I think waiting until next Christmas is the best timing for both of us. We will also be together a year from now, so I will be able to help train the puppy. However, she thinks it would be better to get a puppy now because a year from now she will be looking for a job, and thinks that she has enough free time right now. Please use the following 8 step process to resolve this conflict
Introduction of the Conflict
Step 1: Create an effective atmosphere: Your personal preparation, timing, location, and initial opening statements.
Step 2: Clarify perceptions: Clarify perceptions of the conflict, the self, and the other party.
Step 3: Focus on individual and shared needs. Deal with personal needs; deal with the conflict partner’s needs. (Shared needs are the connecting points holding together a relationship)
Step 4: Build shared positive power. Develop positive self-power and self-image. Reach for the partner’s positive potential and power.
Step 5: Look to the future, then learn from the past. Focus first on the present and future.
Step 6: Generate options: What are they? Learn your conflict partner’s options. Identify key options.
Step 7: Develop “doables” – stepping-stones to action. Make sure that the doable is not just a temporary quick-fix Band-Aid.
Step 8: Make mutual-benefit agreements: Seeking a Win-Win situation! Could you clarify specific responsibility?
