Book Review Assignment, for
The Development Process
Final deadline December 05
Grade allocation: 25%
Book review assignment: Complete a written essay of approx 1,800 words on a book of your choice (but with faculty approval) that has relevance to real estate development, management, operations, finance; or construction management.
As part of this semester, the book review assignment is an opportunity to explore a subject of your interest and explore your insights; where that subject and the form of the book is not a text book, case study, financial analysis, contract review, construction schedule, or other format that is the mainstay of your Schack course work. The book review assignment is an opportunity to think about how this semester’s topics of study inform, influence, and/or reflect upon, your thinking about the subject of the book.
Deadlines:
• December 5: Submit written book review to professor. Post completed assignment to brightspace, by 12:00 noon.
You may want to use the bullet points below as a guide for content of your review.
• BOOK TOPIC AND AUTHORSHIP: What’s the topic of the book, who is/are the author(s) and what makes him/her/them qualified to address this topic? When was the book written and how does that date compare to the topics relevance today? Does the timing (date of subject vs date of author’s writing) provide a perspective that is relevant to the book’s points or conclusions?
• YOUR INTEREST IN THE TOPIC: What drew you to this specific topic or issue? How does the topic fit in to your interest in real estate, and your vision of your career?
• CREDIBILITY AND INSIGHT: Do you disagree with any of the author’s points, assertions, or assumptions? Do you see any of the points, assertions, or assumptions obsolete, or likely to become obsolete, given trends that you foresee in the real estate marketplace?
• OUTCOMES: What did you learn about the topic that surprised you and/or was most meaningful to you? Is there a major take-away that impressed (or discouraged) you and may contribute to an enduring memory or lesson as your career advances?
• RELATION TO OTHER READING IN THIS CLASS OR OTHER CLASSES THIS SEMESTER: Consider commenting on the book’s contents in relation to other readings from this class, or other classes you have/are taking at Schack. Again, put these considerations in the context of your vision of your career.
•
Students are encouraged to propose reviewing a book of their own choosing. Alternatively, there is a list of books below. Many of the authors of these titles have long histories of publishing leading work in their fields. Students are encouraged to explore the authors’ other works in addition to those listed.
