(Doing well in this Discussion assignment required having read the materials on this week’s module.)
1) Marcel’s thought–as explained in resources provided on the module– reminds us of two experiences of the body: ‘I have a body’ and ‘I am my body.’ It is clear to him that both are part of the whole lived-experience of the body. There is something wrong with saying only this: ‘I have a body’. There is also something wrong with saying only this: “I am my body.” Both are real and important experiences of the body; neither one can be denied. How would you explain both experiences to someone who has never read the excerpt from Marcel or the Notes on the excerpt but has enough College level intelligence?
2) Say something that will show how Marcel’s contribution to thinking about the body is significant/relevant. (For example how could it help us in judging public policies, bills being passed in Congress, existing social structures? If you don’t want to go into social issues, you may instead say something about how Marcel’s insights on human embodiment can guide us in our interpersonal relationships (friendship, romantic love, marriage, parental love, sibling love)
