Education and Civil Rights Advocacy as Seen Through the Eyes of the 2011 Movie
Rise of the Planet of the Apes Opinion Paper
What did the writer/director of the 2011 movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes have to say about education and civil rights advocacy? To properly answer this question you first have to consider a really big topic: civil rights advocacy. To help you with this, consider the following questions:
What is considered civil rights?
What are some important civil rights issues today?
What is considered civil rights advocacy?
Does more education change one’s views of civil rights? If so, how so?
How does more or less education change one’s views of how one should fight for civil rights? (Think of the Michael Brown shooting or George Floyd murder and the different approaches different groups used to fight for justice.)
Do you notice a trend in the way different classes of people approach civil rights?
While you don’t have to follow this outline exactly, consider this general outline:
Introduction and Thesis: This is an introduction section that contains your thesis – a clear opinion that takes a stand on your issue. Remember, it doesn’t matter what you say, but be prepared to back it up with textual evidence in the rest of your paper. You may include an extensive introduction as long as it ties directly into a clearly stated thesis.
Summary of the movie: This is a general summary, not a play-by-play of the entire plot. Remember to only include details that are pertinent to your points you will make later. You may use the summary in your intro.
What is the writer’s main point about education and civil rights advocacy? This is part of your thesis and should appear by the end of the introduction.
Evidence from the movie that your claim about the writer’s point is true. Here is where you will spend extensive time going through the details of plot, characterization, symbolism, cinematography, etc to show how the director gets their message across. Do you agree with the writer/director’s message? If not, what do you believe about education and civil rights advocacy?
Give evidence from culture, history, etc (not from the movie) that your view is correct, or that the movie’s view is correct or incorrect. This should be several paragraphs.
