What is humanism? How does an artist demonstrate this idea while conveying Christian subject matter?
These concepts, which may not seem as though they would be in sync, collaborate very well on canvas and in stone in the 15th and 16th century Italian Renaissance.
For this journal entry, choose an artist from the Italian Renaissance and analyze one of his Christian themed works of art through the lens of humanism.
Some ideas to consider: What choices has the artist made that push forth the ideas of humanism? In what ways do these concepts, humanism and Christianity, allow for artists of the Renaissance to expand beyond what was created in the Medieval era. How might a re-birth of Ancient Greek ideas have something to do with this shift in art?
