ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OverviewMeasuring The Activities of Daily Living: Comparisons Across National Surveys (opens in a new window) describe fundamental functions that someone one performs to take care of one’s self and body, in the areas of feeding one’s’ self, tending to personal care, and ability to move about functionally. The Daily Living Activities Assessment Spreadsheet (DLA) (.xlsx) [DOWNLOAD] measures those items and more psychological factors such as relationships, communication, and social habits in order to evaluate how a client is functioning over a period of more than one day and intermittently over a period of several months. The assessment tends to be used to measure the state of a client’s functioning on multiple levels in order to evaluate a state of depression or other factors such as anxiety.Assignment InstructionsDownload and review the Daily Living Activities Assessment Spreadsheet (DLA) (.xlsx) [DOWNLOAD].
Enter data for each measure in the ‘Review’ column 1 of the Daily Living Activities assessment spreadsheet.—For each of the 20 daily living activities, you will assign a score only in ‘Review’ column 1
Score 1 – 7 to reflect functioning in each area for one recent day. Normally, a client would self-score his or her functioning for the past 30 days. For the purposes of this assignment, you only need to interpret your scores for one day.
A DLA assessment is a picture of your client’s living activities for the prior month. It is often repeated every several months to reassess.
Then interpret the results using the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) score, which is calculated automatically once you enter data in each row.
Areas of strength = 5, 6, or 7
A strength is revealed when, in comparison to the rest of the population, a client’s functioning falls ‘within normal limits’ (WNL)
Areas of weakness = 1, 2, 3, or 4
A weakness demonstrates that a client’s functioning is impaired and not within normal limits in comparison to the rest of a given population
When comparisons to a greater population are not available, refer to authoritatively published, well-established benchmarks.
Your DLA Score is the mean (Average) of your answers from ‘Review’ column 1. Your DLA score will be automatically calculated once you enter scores into ‘Review’ column 1.
