Introduction
Values are the underlying principles, consciously and unconsciously adopted, by which you make choices and decisions for your life’s path.
Values are self-motivators that indicate what is most important in your life.
Values are reflected in what you actually do with your time and your life.
Mature, independent, successful individuals act upon their own values and not the values of others.
Values clarification is the process of deciding and clearly stating what you believe. It fosters self-confidence and places you in control of your life.
Reviewing and assessing your values periodically is necessary in order to maintain a clear understanding of who you are, what you want, and where you are going in life. The more awareness you can bring to bear on the question so fundamental to your happiness-“HOW DO I WANT TO LIVE THE REST OF MY LIFE?” – for the better.
What are your present life values? Here is some helpful information. Values can be the answer to questions such as:
* What am I committed to? What would I be willing to die for?
* What am I willing to live joyously or enthusiastically for?
* What is freedom? What is peace of mind? What is security?
* What is power and authority? What comprises happiness in me?
* What is love? How do I think goodness is rewarding? What would I want people to think of me? Do I need ethical standards and integrity in my life?
* What do other people mean to me? What do I want my legacy to be?
* Values may be discussed in terms of how they relate to our life’s goals, objectives, and direction in life. Values are a source of meaning and satisfaction in life. For this learning assignment, instrumental and terminal values will be discussed.

Instructions:
1. Examine both sets of values to familiarize yourself with them.
2. From the set instructional values, choose and list ten values that you feel most strongly about.
3. Prioritize your selected values as instructed in class, using the prioritization forms to determine the ranked order.
4. List your selected instrumental values in their ranked order of importance to you. In at least one complete sentence, define each instrumental value in your own words (DO NOT USE A DICTIONARY).
5. Next, examine the list of terminal values. Repeat the previous procedures on your selection of ten values deemed most important to you, now and in the future.
6. Now, make a list of a third set of values that are least important and would not have in your system of values (minimum 3). Can you think of other least Important values which you do not find included in the two sets of values?
7. Define these least liked values, do not prioritize them.
8. How do you suppose your non-adherence to these values will affect your decision making process, compared to someone who holds these same values in their lives?
9. Finally, describe yourself as a reflection of your values. In a carefully crafted essay of no less than 3 pages (750 words), describe who you are in terms of the important values that shape your personal belief system and decision making framework. You must discuss at least three Terminal values, three Instrumental values and all three Least Important values in your paper. DO NOT REPEAT THE DEFINITION FROM YOUR APPENDICES IN YOUR PAPER. In essence, describe the direction in your life. Focus on the following the three following areas: 1) influences; 2) how you use your chosen values; and 3) how your values influence your leisure choices.
10. Use the first person when writing about “Who you are, in terms of your values”
