In the article “Electric Cars: technical characteristics and environmental impacts” by Eckard Helmers and Patrick Marx, the authors discuss the potential positive impact on the environment that widespread adoption of electrical vehicles yields. The article discusses various new methods have been developed or are in development such as hydrogen-fueled vehicles but none compare to the efficiency potential and power output that is provided by modern lithium Ion batteries. It informs the reader of the practical function of the average EV (Electric Vehicle) in order to help visualize how some methods of propulsion might work and further legitimize their claims. The article concludes by stating “…it seems possible to reduce CO2-equivalent emissions by 80%”(Helmers and Marx).
The increasing attention towards global warming and subsequently cleaner energy has ushered in a new era of scientific research dedicated to creating a sustainable and energy-efficient personal vehicle. With this comes an increasing demand for unsustainable, nonrenewable resources, and methods to obtain these resources are questionable to say the least. The article written by Annie Kelly Entitled, “Apple and Google named in US lawsuit over Congolese child cobalt mining deaths” sheds light on some of the inherent ethical issues present within the supply chain used to source cobalt by major American corporations. The author informs the audience that around 60% of the world’s cobalt, an essential component used to make lithium batteries, comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She argues that supplying cobalt from the DRC presents a human rights catastrophy as the mines operate with child labor and very low wages in general. She also alleges that the companies which sourced the cobalt were at least partially knowledgeable about the operations of these mines. Finally she argues that if electric vehicles are to continue to be produced and widely adopted, the amount of workers will only increase to meed demand.
