Analysis Paper #2
This paper will address the concept of rituals. You will select one topic from below and answer it, making connections to the rituals discussed in our textbook.
Write the paper as if you are sharing the concepts of rituals with someone who is not part of our class. This means you will need to explain the ritual to them using the lens of our textbook, labeling and defining the term and explaining how your example offers a useful illustration of it.
Your text should be used to make sense of every ritual you discuss and should be cited in almost every paragraph of this paper.
Select only ONE of the following options to report on in a 2-4 page paper.
OPTION 1 Romantic relationship rituals: Interview a person in a romantic relationship (not the person you are in a relationship with) and ask that person to describe three rituals that help to sustain their relationship and to identify the origin of the ritual, if possible. Use Bruess’ labels where possible. Analyze the effect of their rituals on their relational culture.
OPTION 2 Parent and child rituals: Using the categories developed by Bruess in her research on rituals, brainstorm how three of Bruess’ categories could be updated to reflect parent-child relationships. For example, turn “couple time”into “parent-child” time, and consider the differences between the two types of ritual. Rituals might include special one-on-one lunches, bedtime rituals, etc. Consider how relational context changes the behaviors performed and meanings attached to the category of ritual.
OPTION 3 Stepfamily rituals: Brainstorm a set of suggestions about the use of rituals you would develop for persons who are creating a stepfamily (you may do some informal research by talking with friends who have already encountered this experience first hand). How would you suggest they deal with the rituals of the past? What would you tell them about the importance of rituals in the new family form? How might these new rituals be created?
The textbook gives you terms and labels to identify the rituals you discuss (such as Bruess’ list), regardless of which paper you select to write. Please use them to demonstrate comprehension of this chapter.
