TOPIC:How does logical reasoning work in Paradise Lost? Paradise Lost Book 9 offers multiple episodes in which the characters offer logical arguments for their behavior: Satan’s temptation of Eve; Eve’s deliberations regarding eating the fruit and whether or not she should include Adam; Adam’s thoughts on eating the fruit. Choose one of these arguments and analyze the character’s reasoning. Explain how the character’s reasoning leads to the decision he or she makes. Consider, as well, whether there might be any flaws in the argument. Do not just repeat the argument.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS: Write a 4-5 page essay with a title relevant to the argument that includes the titles of the texts you are writing about. If you use the Oxford English Dictionary, the King James Bible, the Norton Anthology, or the lectures slides in your paper, please cite them parenthetically. For example: “The printing press had a revolutionary impact on English society, allowing for the reproduction of new Bibles in English” (Weiss, lecture 8A). When writing about poetry, always cite line numbers rather than page numbers. Do not use outside sources for this paper, other than the Oxford English Dictionary or the King James Bible (if you feel you need them). Your paper needs to make an analytical, or interpretive claim about one or two of the texts that are on the syllabus. You need to make claims about the texts themselves. Do not make any large historical claims, For example, do not write things like: “Mankind has always struggled over religion.” Instead, write: “During the seventeenth century, English poets often wrote about religion when they seemed to be writing about something else.” As another example, do not write something like: “The battle of the sexes has always been a problem without a solution.” Instead, write” “ The Wife of Bath seems to view marriage as a form of warfare.” (These are just examples. You do not have to write papers on these specific topics). Do not make claims about literature or about authors that you can’t backup with evidence.
