Deconstructing Addiction Components for Public Health Intervention Overview
Interventions to address substance abuse involved many factors in order to address the complexity of the problem. Before we did deep into recovery philosophy, lets practice determining how interventions address the varied components of addiction.
Preparation
Here are 3 examples of interventions to address SUDs and addiction. One addresses the impact of the community; one addresses the need for focusing treatment to the group and one is a simple behavior change program this is commonly seen.
Did you know that “Sober October” or “Dry January” were a public health effort creatively disguised as a trend!?
Assignment Instructions
STEP 1: Read/watch all three of the following
CNN article: Use of opioid overdose antidote by laypersons rose 43% from 2020 to 2022, study findsLinks to an external site.
Video: ‘A $10 death trip’: Fentanyl is killing teens. Meet one fighting for his lifeLinks to an external site.
CNN article: Why people should consider Sober October, according to a doctorLinks to an external site.
STEP 2: You will then think about the components of addiction and answer the following questions.
For each article, provide a 1-2 sentence summary of the program tell how the program addresses the 3 components of addiction (biological (think actual physical reactions and recovery), psychological (think thoughts and habits) and social (how others support addicts and addicts support each other)
Of the 3 components, the CNN is missing one component, and the Video is missing one, and Sober October actually hits all 3! Pick either the CNN article or the video to add a component to,
STEP 3. FOLLOW MY FORMAT: You will write 3 SHORT summaries each with 3 components. Then offer only one solution. Peer Reply
Find a peer idea you like. Tell us why.
Example
You’ll need to read another article to understand my answers : )
CBS Article Harm reduction program seeks to curb overdoses on Cherokee reservationLinks to an external site.
Summary for CBS article: This program provides harm reduction on an Indian reservation. Harm reduction does not try to stop drug use, it just tries to help addicts avoid other problems such as disease and overdose.
Biological-this does not address the biological component of addiction since it does not try to stop drug use. It does stop other biological processes like overdose though.
Psychological-This addresses some stress issues related to addiction since harm reduction provides clean needles or things like Narcan. Less stress can help addiction. It does not, however, directly address the psychology of the addiction.
Social-Having community members support you addresses the stigma of addiction and helps the social component of addiction.
Missing Solution: The harm reduction team could also hand out journals and encourage the people they are helping to write a gratitude statement every day. Since the users may not have much gratitude for their situation, they could also be instructed to write a gratitude message for the providers. Gratitude has been shown to increase happiness and boost mental health and is used in addiction recovery (1.2)
