This week we are focusing on Self-Disclosure and Boundaries. As a social worker, you will relate to many clients and will want to share your own experiences, however; this is not always appropriate. Look at Exercise 12.1 on pg. 389 in our Interviewing in Action book and answer the questions. In addition, how would you feel if your client learned something personal about you that you didn’t tell them?
Write a 1.5-3-page reflection that addresses the questions. You can either separate these into different sections, or you can synthesize them into one narrative.
Within your reflection response, please refer to the reading assignment. You can cite it by the author’s last name; a reference list is not required. Your response should follow APA 7 formatting guidelines:
Times New Roman, size 12 font, cover page, page #’s and running head
Double spaced
One-inch margins
pg. 289 Exercise 12.1
In small groups, discuss the pros and cons of sharing personal information, and discuss the differences between offering information and being asked questions. In what ways do you think this kind of sharing is similar or different for clients? How do clients come to know clinicians without actually hearing much specific information about us?
