The Office of Children and Family Services is the program that oversees and administers the Child Welfare policies and Child and Family programs in New York State. The purpose of this assignment is for you to become familiar with the Child Welfare policies and/or the resources of your state by exploring the website. Also, you should be able to identify the key factors in assessing child and family risk for abuse as well as resources available to help at risk families.
Visit the OCFS website (www.ocfs.ny.gov) and find the policies for child abuse and neglect in New York State. (Click on CHILD WELFARE or Child Abuse Prevention tab).
(*If you do not live in New York State, you can use your state Child Welfare Office. NYC students can use ACS website for reference for this assignment. New Jersey residents can use DYFS. Please email instructor if you have any questions.)
Please address the following questions for this assignment:
What are the key factors in the assessment of child abuse and neglect?
Does the website provide helpful resources and offer assistance in helping mandated reporters, human service workers and community members identify key factors in assessment of child abuse and neglect? If so, what are they? If not, please explain where you find out this information if needed and where else would you recommend someone to go to find out more information about this issue.
Does the website provide resources for families to help overcome their challenges? What were some of the resources/programs that you found would be useful to recommend to families at risk? Choose one of these programs currently impacting children and families and present a brief analysis of the program. What are some of the underlying assumptions, values and biases underlying policy development and implementation?
