The final assignment for the course will be to write a three to five-page essay on the Redevelopment of the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant (JAAP) property. This property is an excellent example of many of the ecosystem disruptions and corrections that we studied this semester. The objective of the essay is to identify at least three ecosystem disruptions that were corrected, or are being corrected, by actions taken during the multi-year redevelopment process.
At the center of the redevelopment is the establishment of the 19,000-acre Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Midewin is a Native American term that means “healing”. The process of environmental healing was a central concept in the planning of the JAAP property. In addition to the Tallgrass Prairie, other portions of the former ammunitions plant were redeveloped as: a national cemetery, two industrial parks, and a sanitary landfill.
